Meet Our Speakers

Dr. Raymond Hsu is the Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology at the University of San Francisco. Within nephrology, he is the Director of the Glomerular Disease program at UCSF Health, with expertise in treating patients with diseases such as lupus nephritis. Dr. Raymond went to medical school at Northwestern University and continued his medical training at the University of Washington and UCSF.

Dr. Patterson received her undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley and her MD from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She completed her post-doctoral training at UCSF, including her internal medicine residency, rheumatology fellowship, and a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded post-doctoral fellowship in integrative health research. She currently holds a joint faculty position in the Division of Rheumatology and the Osher Center for Integrative Health (OCIH) at UCSF. As a rheumatologist she specializes in the treatment of systemic lupus and in the application of lifestyle medicine alongside biomedical treatments to manage systemic rheumatic conditions. Dr. Patterson’s research program seeks to understand the impact of psychological stress and lifestyle behaviors such as physical activity on immune function and outcomes in people with rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus to inform effective nonpharmacologic adjunctive treatments.

Bree Phillips, MS, RD, is a registered dietitian specializing in pediatric rheumatology and nephrology at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Mission Bay. She focuses on integrative nutrition for chronic disease, helping children and families use nutrition to support their health, reduce inflammation, and encourage overall well-being. Bree earned her Master of Science in dietetics from Mount Mary University and has worked across hospitals, non-profits, and government agencies to translate nutrition science into practical, sustainable strategies. Beyond her clinical role, she is a health writer and media dietitian, dedicated to making evidence-based nutrition accessible and actionable for diverse audiences.
